Adrenaline still pumping, I snatched my helmet from my head and jogged toward the sideline. Cognizant of the post-game interview occurring just a few feet away, I carefully maneuvered around the cameraman, stopping when I heard a high pitch whistle followed by my name. I turned around to find Delonté Blake, our starting quarterback, waving me over to where he stood posted in front of a camera sporting a Kool-Aid-sized grin. Snickering, I shook my head while taking the few steps to reach the man I was often mistaken for.

With the same height, skin tone, and muscular physique, I understood the comparison and confusion, but that was where our physical similarities ended. Although his hair was the same naturally curly texture, he wore his in a set of intricate braids at the crown of his head while the back and sides were faded and almost always had some sort of fancy design. A complete contrast to the abundant curls I kept groomed on my head. In addition to our different hairstyles, I now rocked a full beard, and Blake’s ass barely had any facial hair. Our eyes were different colors. Our nose and facial structure completely different. Hell, our differences far outweighed our similarities, but that didn’t stop fans from asking if we were related or mistaking me for him altogether.

“Just the man I was talking about.” Blake clamped a hand down on my shoulder then quickly shifted his good ole boy smile back toward the camera.

My gaze immediately veered to the right, landing on the reporter standing a few feet away. The puzzled look on her otherwise pleasant face was a clear indication that she wasn’t expecting me or Blake’s little impromptu invitation. It took exactly seven seconds for her to compose herself and switch gears. Armed with a fresh smile, she oozed professionalism as she picked up where she and Blake had left off. It was a seamless transition. She swiftly filled in the few awkward moments of silence with a sports joke then proceeded to fire off questions for both me and Blake.

The interview lasted no more than five minutes, but in that short amount of time, Blake and I played off one another, demonstrating our cohesiveness on and off the field while sharing how we’ve been able to successfully execute power plays. We touched on the turnaround of our franchise and our induvial thoughts on what has made us successful. Rasheeda wrapped up the interview, expressing her appreciation for our time, followed by her signature smile and tag phrase.

“I’m so sorry, beautiful. I didn’t mean to crash your interview.” I used the back of my hand to thump Blake in the chest. “My friend here is still learning the ropes,” I defended through a snicker while settling my eyes on the attractive young journalist.

“No worries, Cam, it actually played out really well. Besides, the camera loves your charismatic ass.” She hit me with a wink before handing over her mic and setting her gaze on Blake.

If that wasn’t the pot calling the kettle black.
