Chapter 5
Five minutes later they pulled into the parking lot of Bruins Bar and Grill. The sun started its descent over the ocean, the sky splashed with orange and yellow.
âThis place makes a great burger,â Art commented as they pulled in. âItâs a college bar, but itâs usually quiet on weeknights.â
They walked inside where a couple of TVs showed local sports games, and smoke filled the air. If it was a college bar, no college students seemed to get the memo. A handful of older men sat at the bar, puffing cigarettes and sipping from beer bottles. The tables and booths in the dining area were deserted with the exception of a man in a business suit reading a book as his plate showed the final remains of ketchup and French fries.
âGo grab us that corner booth,â Art said, nodding to the back of the dining room. âIâll get us some drinks.â
Max crossed to the booth and sat down on the noisy, vinyl seating. He looked around, wondering how someone in such great shape as Art would end up in a place like this. Maybe he normally came on the weekends to pick up college girls; that seemed more his style.
Art returned with two glasses of whisky in hand and placed them carefully on the table. âLetâs order some food. We might be here a while.â He gathered the menus from the center of the table and pushed one across to Max.
Max wasnât at all hungry thanks to the ball of stress forming in his gut, but knew if he didnât eat heâd be stuck snooping around his in-lawsâ house in the middle of the night for a snack. And judging by their current state, he figured any food would likely be spoiled.
âIâll just have what youâre having,â Max mumbled, sipping his drink.
âEverything okay?â Art asked, his brows drooping in concern.
âNo, Art. Iâm emotionally numb. And ever since you told me that you needed to talk with me in private, Iâve been stressed out. Iâm sure itâs nothing, but my emotions are in all sorts of twists right now.â
âI know this is hard, but itâs part of the reason I brought you here tonight. Let me ask you one question before anything: do you think Chris had any sort of involvement with that plane crash?â
Art studied Max with burning eyes. Max met his stare, and slowly nodded.
âI thought so, too. Do you remember a guy named Antonio Marinovic? That big European man with the heavy accent?â
âI do.â Max remembered him from the group of forty Revolters who had been recruited together. Antonio didnât speak clear English, but came across friendly and gentle despite his behemoth height of seven feet.
âYou probably didnât hear about it, but Antonio had a similar thing happen to him. He lost his girlfriend of like ten years, and they had a son together. I think the boy was seven years old.â
âWas?â
âYes. Antonioâs girlfriend and kid went out for a drive to the park last summer and a semi-truck ran a red light.
