By late afternoon, Heywood had taken the lead, following a rocky trail up a steep incline. He reined in his horse at the top, waiting for the others to reach him.

Wiping the grime and sweat off his face, he glared at the brewing storm. They would get soaked if they went much further. He knew Theo would suggest heading back and feared what that would mean for the safety of his cattle and the people in town.

Pushing himself further up the trail, Heywood’s horse suddenly reared at a pack of wolves cryptically emerging from the trees around him. Their fur bristled as growls rumbled up their throats. He pulled up his rifle, hesitating in order to weigh his options. The rest of the hunting party was still twenty feet back. If he fired now and set the pack into attack mode, he’d be helpless to protect himself.

One of the wolves suddenly leapt at Saturn and Heywood moved on instinct.

He felt the crack of his rifle just seconds before it all went to hell.
