This has always been true of Hollywood since the very beginning, when the pioneers of the motion picture industry moved to California in order to avoid lawsuits from Thomas Edison, who wanted to charge people for using his patented film camera. Hollywood is a town founded and largely run by disreputable carnies. That is why I think many people in the rest of the United States get so exasperated by moral and political preaching from actors and other entertainment industry types. These are people who in earlier times would have been traveling from town to town selling snake oil and stealing pies from your windowsill. The hypocrisy of modern Hollywood sexual puritanism is as ridiculous as the plotline of a Jean-Claude Van Damme action thriller in the eighties. To put it another way, I once had an actress of a certain age who had been a bit pompous and haughty and pleased with herself on my late-night show. I told this to a very famous movie director who had worked with her, and he replied, “God help us when the whores become ladies.” That’s Hollywood. Nowt as grand as an old tart.
