Sleeping in Arromanches
Arromanches, with its pinwheels and seagulls, has a salty beach-town ambience that makes it a fun overnight stop. For evening fun, do what most do and head for the small bar at Restaurant “Le Pappagall” (French slang for “parakeet”) in the Hôtel d’Arromanches, or, for more of a nightclub scene, have a drink at the Mary Celeste Pub, around the corner on Rue Colonel René Michel.
Drivers should also consider my sleeping recommendations near Omaha Beach (see here).
$$$ Hotel Les Villas d’Arromanches*** has a privileged location, perched above the sea at the town’s entry, a short walk to the center (easy and free parking). The original hotel has an attractive manor house feel with tastefully designed rooms, though plans are afoot to attach a new building in 2018 with more rooms, a spa, and a fitness room. Standard rooms are fairly priced, but you’ll pay much more for rooms with views or a terrace (1 Rue du Lieutenant-Colonel de Job, tel. 02 31 21 38 97, www.lesvillasdarromanches.com, [email protected]).
$$ Hôtel de la Marine*** has a knockout location with point-blank views to the artificial harbor from most of its 33 comfortable rooms (family rooms, includes breakfast, elevator, view restaurant, Quai du Canada, tel. 02 31 22 34 19, www.hotel-de-la-marine.fr, [email protected]).
$ Hôtel d’Arromanches,** on the main pedestrian drag near the TI, is a good value, with nine small, straightforward rooms (some with water views), all up a tight stairway that feels like a tree house. Here you’ll find the cheery, recommended Restaurant “Le Pappagall” run by English-speaking Luis (2 Rue Colonel René Michel, tel. 02 31 22 36 26, www.hoteldarromanches.fr, [email protected]).
$ L’Hôtel Ideal de Mountbatten,*** located a long block up from the water, is a 12-room, two-story, motel-esque place with generously sized, stylish, clean, and good-value lodgings—and welcoming owners Sylvie and Laurent (family rooms, reception closed 14:00-16:00, easy parking—free if you book directly, short block below the main post office at 20 Boulevard Gilbert Longuet, tel. 02 31 22 59 70, www.hotelarromancheslideal.fr, [email protected]).
