$$$ Art de Séjour is a classy splurge B&B a few blocks from the Grand Place (farther than the others listed here...but worth it). Well-run by Mario, it fills a gorgeously restored old building with four thoughtfully appointed rooms that are an engaging mix of new (Macs in every room) and old (original woodwork). Mario’s training as an engineer shows in all the special touches (air-con, elevator and a few stairs, Rue des Bogards 12, tel. 02-513-9755, www.artdesejour.com, [email protected]).
$$$ Hotel Ibis off Grand Place, well-situated halfway between Central station and the Grand Place, is the best of six Ibis locations in or near Brussels. It’s a big, modern hotel offering 184 simple, industrial-strength-yet-comfy rooms. Prices change almost daily with demand, so check the website (breakfast extra, nonsmoking, air-con, elevator, Marché aux Herbes 100, tel. 02-514-4040, www.ibishotel.com, [email protected]).
$$ Hotel Opéra, on a people-filled street near the Grand Place, is professional but standardized, with lots of street noise and 49 well-worn rooms (RS%, family rooms, request a quieter courtyard room, elevator, Rue Grétry 53, tel. 02-219-4343, www.hotel-opera.be, [email protected]).
$$ Hotel La Madeleine, on the small “Agora” square between Central station and the Grand Place, rents 56 plain, dimly lit rooms. It has a great location and a friendly staff (RS%, request a quieter back room when you reserve, breakfast extra, air-con in some rooms, elevator, Rue de la Montagne 22, tel. 02-513-2973, www.hotel-la-madeleine.be, [email protected], Philippe).
