Chapter Eighteen

I’m distracted the whole week with homework. Midterms and final projects are coming up, so it’s an understatement to say I’m swamped. It’s a good thing I’m distracted, so I don’t have to think about the Princes. Declan’s still standoffish, Ethan spends a lot of his time locked in his room and Colt…well, let’s just say Colt likes to have fun with his girls. But he at least texts me. I hardly hear from the other two.

I’m almost sad when the weekend arrives. Almost. Because I know I’ll have to face Declan and Ethan. It’s kind of become routine for the four of us to meet in the Princes’ private game room. I wish things were back to normal.

Knowing my phone will blow up with texts from Colt if I don’t show up, I make my way over there. Colt jumps to his feet. “Finally, she’s here! Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?” I ask.

“Bowling.”

I look from one guy to the next. Colt seems excited, Ethan looks distracted, and Declan…well, I have no idea what the hell he’s thinking. I swear he looks excited that I’m here, but he looks pissed, too. I have no idea if it’s directed at me or someone else.

“Why the long face?” I tease Declan. “I thought bowling grew on you. You had a lot of fun the last time.”

He folds his arms over his chest.

I swallow. I was trying to lighten things up between us, but now we stand here in total awkwardness.

“You guys don’t have to hang out with me if you don’t want to,” I say. “I can occupy myself in my room.”

“What is this nonsense?” Colt demands. “You’re part of us, Dani.”

I laugh lightly. “I’m not part of you.”

“Sure you are.” He throws an arm around me, leading me toward the basement of the rec room.

“I think the other kids would throw a party if I left Queenswood,” I say.

“Screw them.”

Ethan and Declan follow us down to the bowling alley, which, surprise surprise, is completely empty. After we get a staff member to set us up with three games, we put on our shoes and pick balls.

I meet Declan at the ball return machine, where he deposits his black ball. “I meant what I said,” I tell him. “You don’t have to be here if you don’t want to.”

“I’m never anywhere I don’t want to be, if I could help it.” He heads to the computer, where Colt is putting in our names. He chooses the same names I chose the last time—Dynamic Dani, Charismatic Colt, Enigmatic Ethan, and Deadpan Declan. Declan frowns at his name, but he doesn’t demand Colt change it.

“You’re up, Dani!” Colt announces.

I head to the lane, swinging my arm and launching the ball. It goes straight for the middle before veering to the left and landing in the gutter. I turn around to face the others. “That was such bullshit.”

“I know, right?” Colt chuckles. “So unfair.”

Declan sits in his seat with his arms folded across his chest, looking…well, angry.
