Chapter 17
âWaitââ Frankie choked on the sip of coffee she had just taken ââyou want me to what?â
The call was delayed by approximately three minutes, coming from Luna as it was. Which made this particular kind of shocked give-and-take style conversation lose a bit of its punch.
Station Chief Brillian had just ordered her to raid the McAaron estate again, seize Martin and Edward McAaron and any staff present, and bring them in on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and politically motivated assassination. Two incredibly heinous charges, especially for the staff, which, letâs be real here, even if the McAarons were involved, it was highly unlikely their staff would be. Right? She calculated the odds to be less than 5 percent.
The week sheâd been on Mars had been spent monitoring the freshly released elderly man. It had been business as usual for him, near as she could tell, not that sheâd been able to speak with him herself as sheâd requested. Nothing at all seemed out of place. The man visited the offices daily, spent time pouring over books with his advisors, and all that boring, normal stuff. Her presence out here was a waste of time and HODEF resources. Unless both McAarons were incredible liars and impeccable planners, there was no way either of them had been involved. It was possible Edward McAaron was just stupid enough to get wrapped up in something ancillary involved with this business, but nothing more than a minor infraction.
The repeated raids seemed cruel at best, criminal at worst.
Most of their operations unit had been set up in a field office near Foundersâ Square. Thatâs where Tara was. Subsequently, thatâs why Frankie wasnât. The entire time theyâd been on Mars together, her friend had been trying to coax information from her. How was she feeling? Was she okay? Was there anything she needed? It had been exhausting. Most of the real work was handled in this seedy establishment.
Frankie took another sip from her mug. The coffee was absolute shit at this rattrap of a hotel, but it was cheap; that was about all it had going for it. It was also the last place HODEF would look for her, being so far removed fromâwell, everything useful.
She checked the comms countdown on her terminal. It indicated it had been almost four minutes since her communications went out. More than enough time for Brillian to respond to her. It was likely he was too busy trying to flip the heavy desks of the HODEF office in one of his tantrums. Orâand this happened too regularly to be a coincidenceâheâd forgotten to hit the transmit button again. Either way, sheâd give him another five minutes, then she was going to start putting together the op, however ridiculous it was.
A knock at the door made her jump in her chair. âCome in.â
The door opened to reveal Kelley Kataoka, her junior-level operational assistant. Which was a weird term, since she was more of a project manager than anything else.
