NINETEEN

Ryan used heavy zip-ties to restrain his limp body to a chair once he found ourselves back in the kitchen. Matt injected enough tranquilizers to put down a horse while he stared at me.

“Did you pistol whip my brother?” He finally asked.

“Yes,” I admitted. “He wouldn’t shut up.”

He didn’t respond. There was nothing to say.

We stared, waiting for him to make a move, but only his chest gave any sign that he was still alive. A heavy, unexpected knock at the door made us jump. Ryan stood up and opened the door, letting one of the police officers from earlier step inside.

Daniels stood in the entryway, our eyes boring into him like needles. “I-uh, I’m just here to discuss the damages to the house and get some alibis so I can clear your names.”

“We were here, training.” Jack was calm, leaning in close to Shawn.

“That is all you need to know.” Matt scanned our faces as if daring one of us to speak up.

We didn’t; the cops knew all they needed to know. The less they knew the better. They had our simple to remember alibi. What more did they want? Matt and Ryan had gotten rid of any trace of making napalm, and Mark and Sue ended up staying behind to bury the evidence of remaining arrows deep below the earth.

“Okay, good enough.” Daniels smiled nervously. Jack kicked a chair out, offering him a seat. Daniels took it, his shoulders relaxing slightly. “So, uh, why is your friend tied up? And…you,” he pointed to Jack, “look like a mess.”

“Yeah, I know.” Jack nodded. “Shawn here tried to kill me. And Matt. And Mark. And Karen.”

“Why not shoot him? Or I could arrest him…” His words trailed.

Matt and Ryan snapped their heads around and glowered at Daniels.

“You touch my brother and I’ll break more than just your bones.” Matt spoke with poison on his tongue.

Daniels gulped and didn’t press the issue further. “I’ll just…uh, leave.”

“No, you don’t need to do that.” Jack stood. “Stay. It’s fine, really. Have something to eat.”

Despite Daniels threatening Shawn, Jack still opened his home. Daniels looked like he needed a break too. He was still in uniform and his face was pale. There were dark circles under his eyes and his back was hunched with his exhaustion. He likely worked long, grueling hours and now he just let us get away with arson. It was a crime that probably made his gut scream to just lock us up, yet he had to push his instincts aside and let us win. We couldn’t allow any other alternative. The least we could do was give him a peaceful place to sit and breathe.

We sat around the kitchen, eating pizza, salads, and any leftovers we could find, and gulping down glasses of water. Jack pulled his chair over so he was face to face with Shawn, their knees almost touching. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich was made and ready for when Shawn awoke from his drug-induced slumber. A few long minutes passed before he began to stir.
