Chapter Eleven
Walker
A burden? How could the woman you love and the child you created ever be a burden? I had to stamp down the anger that threatened to make me roar.
Sitting next to Jasmine while she spilled out her feelings was like a vice clamping down on my heart. It took all my strength not to pull her into my arms and beg her to let me into her life. I barely knew this woman, in fact, I knew little other than she was married to a complete prick, and had a son she adored. Well, I also knew that one kiss from her could rock my world, but I didnât think I should say anything about that right now.
Jasmine was in a rough spot. With her tumultuous marriage ending and the incident with her son, she was vulnerable. Sure, I wanted to be the knight in shining armor who swooped in and rescued her, that was the type of man I was, but it wasnât my place to do so. At least, right now it wasnât. The best that I could do was to be a friend to her and a good doctor to her son.
Of course, once she got her feet back under her, Iâd be more than happy to do anything for her. Shit, Iâd do anything for her now.
âIâm sorry, Jasmine. Thatâs not a good environment for either of you. No wonder you did what you did at the party.â
âYou think I only did that because of my husband?â she asked and slanted her dark eyes at me.
âYou said before you only did it because you were angry,â I reminded her.
She sighed and slumped in her chair. âI did say that, but perhaps I wasnât totally truthful in my statement.â
I quirked an eyebrow in her direction, but she was staring at her lukewarm coffee cup.
âI was angry at Rob, actually I was furious. But that anger had been growing. It was just the last straw. Iâd already had divorce papers drawn up, and I told him if he didnât show up and decide that our marriage was what he wanted, then I wasnât waiting for him anymore. I made a snap decision that night when I saw you. Iâm sorry for what happened that night with your lady friend, but Iâm not sorry I kissed you.â
âForget the lady friend; she was just that, a friend who was a lady.â I waited for her to look up, but she kept her head down and her eyes in her lap. âJasmine, look at me, please.â
When she lifted her eyes to mine, I saw so much hurt in them. It clamped the vice a bit tighter in my chest. âDid you mean what you just said? About not being sorry about the kiss?â A tiny bit of color spread over her cheeks and I wanted to chase the color with my hands.
âYes, I meant it. You said that when I kissed you, it woke you up. It did the same to me.
