By the time the Republic Militia had gathered in the pass, it consisted of 4000 Infantry, 1000 cavalry, and 200 artillerymen, with 20 breech-loading cannon. Early the next morning, under a flag of truce, a young Captain rode out to a point half way between the armies and stopped. A short time later a young Royal officer joined him. The Captain handed the Royal officer a letter and returned to his lines.

The letter was addressed to Lord Hewitt from Governor Stoddard:

Dear Sir:

In the interest of avoiding further bloodshed, I am making a final appeal to you, as the leader of our opposing forces. The army you are facing has weapons far in advance of anything you, or the Kingdom possesses. The army I led through the desert was devastated by a force half our numbers, and could have been wiped out completely. We lost 90 percent of our Cavalry and Artillery forces and most of the officers in the Infantry. The American Republic could have massacred everyone else, except for an act of generosity and humanity. Our losses were sustained while they had zero causalities.

Your youngest son, Robert, lost his right leg in the battle, but has survived. He is here with the Bristol Republic Army, and will be allowed to return home if you agree to cease hostilities. I will bring him to a parley, if you agree to it, and will let him describe the horror you will face if you fail to agree to our terms.

I am sure you have seen the leaflets dropped by our airships, and those are our terms. If you accept them before noon tomorrow, you and your family will not face forfeit of your estates. Your people, including the serfs will be free to work in your paid employ, or to leave the estates with all their possessions, tools, and livestock. All of the serfs must be paid one pound for every year of service since reaching adulthood.

We await your response.
