Collette stood in the back of the bookstore, shelving a new order of books that had just been delivered. She straightened the shelves as she moved along and refiled some books that were in the wrong place. That happened when customers would grab a book to look at, but then not buy it. Sometimes they got put back in the wrong place. It was a constant battle to keep the books organized. She put a romance book back on the shelf in alphabetical order by author—because she was certain that D came before F.

“Hey, you.”

She couldn’t help her wide smile as she twirled around to see Mark standing there with a bouquet of flowers in his hands. “Mark, what are you doing here?”

“Taking a long weekend.” He grinned at her. “Thought I’d spend it with you.”

She threw her arms around him. “I’m so happy to see you.” She kissed him quickly, then glanced around to see if anyone was watching them. “But I have to work this weekend.”

“I might have called Jody and asked if she’d cover for you. Besides, you also have that new worker you just hired. You said she was catching on quickly, right? Jody said they’d be fine. She was tickled you’d be taking some time off.”

“Really?”

“Really. You’ve just got the day shift tomorrow, then she has the weekend and you’re all mine. I hope you don’t mind that I called her. I wanted to surprise you.”

“I’m not going to complain about that.” She took the flowers he handed her and buried her nose in them, reveling in their sweet yet spicy scent.

“Good, because I have plans. Going to happy hour at Blue Heron Cottages tomorrow. A beach day on Saturday, or we could go to some of those antique shops you like to browse through. Really, as long as I’m with you, I don’t care what we do. I got a room at Blue Heron Cottages, but I want to spend every waking moment with you.”

“It all sounds wonderful. I miss you when you’re back at home.” She smiled up at him, memorizing his face as if she hadn’t just seen him six days ago. “How’s work going?”

“Really well.” His eyes lit up. “I’ve had some new ideas for displays that are paying off. Mr. Mason hired two new workers, so that’s why it was easier to get time off. He said that since I’ve hardly taken any time off in all the years I’ve worked at the hardware store, I should make up for lost time.” He brushed her cheek with a kiss. “So I took him up on his offer.”

Jody walked up to them. “Ahem, sorry to interrupt. I see you surprised her.” Jody grinned. “But why don’t you two lovebirds go ahead and leave? Spend some time together. I’ve got things here and I’ll lock up at closing time.”

“You sure?”

Jody laughed. “I’m positive. All you’ve done the last week is talk about Mark. Say how much you missed him.”

“She did?” Now it was Mark’s turn to grin.
