Silas and Bess did most of the baking. He seemed to be an expert at it, which was the last thing I was expecting from a Denton of all people! They popped a perfectly looking chocolate cake into the oven and put it on timer.
“When can we make the icing?” Bess asked while Silas dusted his hands.
“While the cake is cooling down. We can take a break for some time now,” he said. His jacket was off, his shirt sleeves were rolled up, his pants were covered in patches of flour but he didn’t seem to care. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh at him or not. It was just such an odd sight to see.
“Why don’t you watch some TV, hun?” I suggested to Bess who was more than delighted about that. When she went running out of the kitchen, I turned to face Silas. He was washing his hands in the sink.
“That felt therapeutic. Haven’t baked a nice wholesome chocolate cake in years,” he said. “Maybe the last one I baked was with my sister when she was about Bess’ age.”
“How old is she now?” I asked, smiling.
“Nearly twenty-three. She’s much younger than me.”
“So she was very small when…”
“When Mom died? Yeah,” he replied and kept his gaze turned from me.
I busied myself with making coffee while he stood around in the kitchen. The past four days had been miserable. I thought I’d be over him easily, I thought it had meant nothing more than a one night stand, but it was impossible to get him out of my mind. I couldn’t stop thinking about him and everything he said.
I hoped to see him again, but never in a million years would I have imagined him in my kitchen, baking a cake with my daughter!
“Thank you for your donation. We are all extremely grateful at the agency. We’ll be able to do some great work with it,” I said, pouring coffee into two mugs.
“Thank you for accepting it.”
He took the mug from me and we sipped our drinks slowly, barely glancing at each other.
“I’m sure you’re wondering what I’m doing here.” He finally addressed the elephant in the room.
“A little bit,” I admitted and he ran a hand through his hair.
“I’m sorry I’m here, I just had to see you. I felt like it was unfair for us to just leave it like that.”
I didn’t know what I wanted to hear, but I didn’t know what to expect either.
“Did you have more to say?” I asked but my voice came out as a whimper.
“Didn’t you?” He asked and I looked down at my coffee mug in embarrassment. Of course I had more to say. I just didn’t know if he wanted to hear any of it. In fact I was sure they weren’t things he wanted to hear.
I watched him silently as he took a few more sips of his coffee.
“This is weird for me because I don’t usually just show up at women’s houses like this, after I’ve fucked them already.
