Chapter Fourteen

Samantha wasn’t the only one who needed to rise to the occasion.

Praise God for Edwina and her Dusty.

“I’m so thrilled with the girl’s improvement.”

“Amen again. I hate feeling so unable to help my baby.”

“I’m sure.” She smiled at him, then flattened the upturned corners of her lips. “But as happy as I am about that, I’m as concerned for Mis’ess Dunston and her brother. They seem to be getting worse.”

He finished his beans, stood, and extended his free hand. “We best let the others eat something.”

Looking up, she took his bowl. “I’ll rinse this and get a bowl to feed the girls. I don’t think Debby Sue’s folks will want any, but you could ask, I guess.”

Then she grabbed his hand and he pulled her to her feet. By accident or on purpose—she couldn’t tell which if her life depended on it—she came up too fast and ended up in his arms around her, as though he’d caught her.

In the moment, she pressed her cheek into his chest and filled her lungs. So tired, she might stay there forever if . . . if . . . She pushed back. “Mercy me. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.”

“Nothing to be sorry for. My fault, if anyone’s. Guess I tugged too hard. You’re so light . . .”

“No, I didn’t mean to—”

“It’s been a long day. You may have a hug anytime you need one.”

“And friends do hug, don’t they?” She smiled. “Well, my friend, I truly need one in the worst way.”

He wrapped his arms around her and held her.
