“There you go.” Samuel dumped an extra handful of oats in Old Brown’s feed. The horse studied him before eating them, almost as if he knew something was up. And something would be if the gray’s leg wasn’t better. Old Brown hated being hitched to the sleigh, or anything, for that matter. But the horse’s stubbornness was not enough to keep them from his parents’ home for Christmas.

He checked on the other animals before entering the shop he had sectioned off from the barn. The box he had made and carved for Lucy sat in the center of the workbench. Adding the extra bit of oil was the right decision. He ran his hand lightly over the wood and traced the lavender flowers he’d carved there. He would give his wife her gift tonight. The rattle and drawing board he would save to give his girls at his parents’ house tomorrow, along with the new bowl he’d made for his mother.

Slipping into the lean-to, Samuel set the box on the shelf and covered it with his scarf. He wanted to wait until he could be alone with Lucy to give it to her.

The delicious scents of nutmeg and ginger lingered in the air from the morning’s baking. Sarah leaned over a paper at the table, and Lucy sat in the rocker cradling a hungry Maryanna in one hand and reading the journal with the other as the fire snapped and crackled.

Lucy looked up and gave him a smile. The shadows below her eyes were less pronounced than last week. Samuel slid behind the rocker and kneaded her shoulders. She closed the book and leaned into his touch. Maryanna stared up at him as if to say, “Who disturbs my meal?” then returned to more important manners.

“Where were you reading?”

When Lucy opened the book, Samuel began to read silently over her shoulder.
