By the time we left the dance after midnight, my emotions were at fever pitch. An air of anticipation hung between us. A kiss would top off the evening, I thirsted for it like a nomad in the desert. I licked my dry lips, pulled out a stub of cherry lip gloss from my bag, and applied it as unobtrusively as possible. The Porsche hugged the corners and threw our bodies against each other. The road earned its nickname, Opportunity Corner, as we both welcomed the contact.

At the lookout point on Munro Drive, Marc and I got out of the car and walked over to the rails where only the metal barrier stood between us and a plunge to the road below. Only the occasional chirp of crickets broke the silence of the night as they rustled around the tall grass. Breathing in deep, I savoured the smell that always reminded me of sweet watermelon.

Our friends stayed in their car. I asked Marc why.

“They’ll join us in a minute,” he replied.

As he inched closer to me, a warm male smell enveloped me in an intoxicating blend of sandalwood and spice. He touched my cheek with feather-light strokes, and I pressed my lips against his fingers, eager for every way we could connect.

“Did you enjoy tonight?”

A smile spread over my face. I couldn’t suppress it. “It was the best.” I didn’t want it to end.

In slow motion, he turned me towards him. I’ve waited for this–a proper kiss, at last. The one at Sandton Square didn’t count in my books. Goosebumps prickled my skin in anticipation, and I released a pent-up sigh on a whoosh of breath.

He misinterpreted my reaction and rubbed my arms. “Are you cold?”

I tried to shake my head but couldn’t as his fingers slipped around my chin. Our bodies were centimetres apart, and I leaned into him to close the remaining distance.

“I’ll get you out of here in a sec,” he promised, as his breath fanned and warmed my ear. “Um... Emma, I’ve known you for over nine-hundred-and-twelve days, and I’ve liked you for twenty-one thousand, eight-hundred-and-eighty-eight hours.”

As Marc spouted numbers, my brain turned to mush. With only bright moonlight as my guide, I searched his eyes to figure out where he was heading. His calloused thumb tingled my skin as he rubbed them back and forth along my chin. It lit a fire deep inside and stoked flames that left me aching for more. Breathless, I waited for his next move.

Marc’s voice shook. “I’ve waited ages to ask you, but no more. Will you spend the remaining hundred-and-fifty days of the year as my girlfriend?”

I lifted my head, amazed by the uncertainty in his eyes, as if he didn’t expect a positive response. What a question. I flung my arms around him and kissed him, ecstatic that what I waited for was finally here, like first raindrops after a protracted drought. My eyes fluttered close as I savoured the contact of his lips–they felt like warm, soft pillows.
