The afternoon sun created a fiery background, giving Jordanâs blonde hair a hint of strawberry highlights as she looked out the truckâs window. Would the strands feel as soft as he imagined? What if he kissed her? Would her lips mold to his? Or, would their difference of opinions keep him from intimately reaching her? Tanner tightened his grip on the wheel, resisting the sudden urge to find out.
If Jordan couldnât accept Dadâs relationship with Ellie, Tannerâs hope for any kind of a future with her was forfeit. Loyalty to his father had to remain foremost in his mind. He refused let down another family member, not after losing his mother. The pain and regret was too much to bear. He prayed for the softening of Jordanâs heart. Otherwise, nothing short of a miracle would mend the broken hearts left behind.
âYou seem to know exactly where youâre going,â Jordan commented, rousing him from his thoughts. âIâd get lost out on all these winding country roads.â
He spared a sideways glance at her and then took a sharp left onto yet another road. âI know the way to my project sites and my land. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine.â
âYour land?â
âI purchased a waterfront lot at about the same time I moved in with Dad. Weâre heading there now.â
Her brows lifted, and her eyes widened. âYou own land on the lake too? Are you going to build a home on it?â
âThatâs my plan.â
âHave you started?â
âNot yet.â
âWhy not?â
He shrugged. âAt first, I didnât want to leave Dad alone in the manor. Itâs a big house for one person to live in.â
âWhat about now that my momâs around? Sheâll be moving in after the wedding.â
Tanner debated how much to tell her. Her open curiosity encouraged him. Hoping he wasnât making a mistake, he offered, âThis might seem old fashioned, or a little crazy, but I want to have my future wifeâs input on the design.â
A warm smile grew on her lips. âThatâs not crazy. Itâs considerate andâ¦sweet. Not many men would put their dreams on hold for someone else.â
âTo be honest, my patience had about worn out before I discovered Dadâs idea of using Match Made in Heaven. The service worked so well for him, I took another look at my strategy.â
âYour strategy? Falling in love isnât a strategy. Itâs just something that happens.â
âYou think so? Is that how it was with you and your ex? What was his name again?â
âDerek.â
âSo, was it love at first sight with Derek?â Tanner recognized the stirrings of jealousy as he waited for her answer.
Jordan bit her lower lip and stared out the windshield. âNo. I wouldnât call it an instant kind of love.â
âCare to elaborate?â
âNot really.â
âYouâre right. Itâs none of my business.â He flexed his fingers and then tightened his hands on the wheel.
âI didnât say it wasnât your business.â She swung her head around. âYouâve shared a lot of your past with me.â
âThen tell me.â
âWell, thereâs not a whole lot to tell. Derek and I met in our senior year at college.
