Reluctant Bridesmaid

The afternoon sun created a fiery background, giving Jordan’s blonde hair a hint of strawberry highlights as she looked out the truck’s window. Would the strands feel as soft as he imagined? What if he kissed her? Would her lips mold to his? Or, would their difference of opinions keep him from intimately reaching her? Tanner tightened his grip on the wheel, resisting the sudden urge to find out.

If Jordan couldn’t accept Dad’s relationship with Ellie, Tanner’s hope for any kind of a future with her was forfeit. Loyalty to his father had to remain foremost in his mind. He refused let down another family member, not after losing his mother. The pain and regret was too much to bear. He prayed for the softening of Jordan’s heart. Otherwise, nothing short of a miracle would mend the broken hearts left behind.

“You seem to know exactly where you’re going,” Jordan commented, rousing him from his thoughts. “I’d get lost out on all these winding country roads.”

He spared a sideways glance at her and then took a sharp left onto yet another road. “I know the way to my project sites and my land. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine.”

“Your land?”

“I purchased a waterfront lot at about the same time I moved in with Dad. We’re heading there now.”

Her brows lifted, and her eyes widened. “You own land on the lake too? Are you going to build a home on it?”

“That’s my plan.”

“Have you started?”

“Not yet.”

“Why not?”

He shrugged. “At first, I didn’t want to leave Dad alone in the manor. It’s a big house for one person to live in.”

“What about now that my mom’s around? She’ll be moving in after the wedding.”

Tanner debated how much to tell her. Her open curiosity encouraged him. Hoping he wasn’t making a mistake, he offered, “This might seem old fashioned, or a little crazy, but I want to have my future wife’s input on the design.”

A warm smile grew on her lips. “That’s not crazy. It’s considerate and…sweet. Not many men would put their dreams on hold for someone else.”

“To be honest, my patience had about worn out before I discovered Dad’s idea of using Match Made in Heaven. The service worked so well for him, I took another look at my strategy.”

“Your strategy? Falling in love isn’t a strategy. It’s just something that happens.”

“You think so? Is that how it was with you and your ex? What was his name again?”

“Derek.”

“So, was it love at first sight with Derek?” Tanner recognized the stirrings of jealousy as he waited for her answer.

Jordan bit her lower lip and stared out the windshield. “No. I wouldn’t call it an instant kind of love.”

“Care to elaborate?”

“Not really.”

“You’re right. It’s none of my business.” He flexed his fingers and then tightened his hands on the wheel.

“I didn’t say it wasn’t your business.” She swung her head around. “You’ve shared a lot of your past with me.”

“Then tell me.”

“Well, there’s not a whole lot to tell. Derek and I met in our senior year at college.
