Chapter Nine
Kyle tapped the steering wheel in impatient anticipation. He was eager to get to the resort, so eager that heâd cut himself shaving in his rush to see Lauren.
Once he arrived, he looked for her in Darcyâs office, but the door was shut and no one answered. Sharing a cup of coffee with the Harrisons, he barely paid attention to Hunterâs words as he scanned the people milling about the room setting up for the conference.
Lauren finally breezed in twenty minutes before the conference started, looking frazzled. However, he was encouraged by her brief smile as she waved to him from across the room.
As the day wore on, he tried to engineer a meeting with her, but there was too much requiring either her attention or his. The day ended with their interaction culminating in a stolen hug in the hallway. âI am so tired. Iâm heading to bed.â
He tried not to show how disappointed he was, but she caught it anyway. Her hand fell on his arm. âIâm sorry. Weâll talk tomorrow.â
The next morning, he was seated at the café, looking out for her silhouette to appear on the dock. He sent her a text message. Good morning. How did you sleep?
An hour later, he hadnât received a response yet and he began to worry. He headed to Darcyâs office and found Laurenâs aunt, not Lauren, sitting at the desk.
âHey, I was looking for Lauren?â
âOh, I took her to the airport this morning.â
Her cell phone rang as he opened his mouth to ask for clarification. She held up a finger. âSorry, Kyle. Give me a second. I have to take this.â
He walked out of the office with his head down. Had he been a fool again? What was with this woman?
Kyle sank down into his chair and tossed his phone on the desk. He stared at the screen, willing her to call or text. He was halfway through an email that took him nearly a half hour to compose because his mind was elsewhere, when out of the corner of his eye he saw the phone display light up as it vibrated on his desktop.
Snatching it up, he answered dejectedly when he saw the display. âHey, Elliott.â
âDonât sound so happy to hear from me.â
âSorry,â Kyle pulled off his glasses and let them dangle from two fingers as he rubbed his eyes. âI was hoping you were Lauren. She went to the airport this morning.â
âUh-oh. Not againâ
âYeah.â He rocked back in the chair and leaned his head against the back of it. âNext time, remind me to keep my romantic notions buried.â
âNot a chance, brother,â Elliott said. âIf she left, then you know itâs over. But if it works out, isnât that worth the risk of possible heartache?â
âYeah,â he conceded after a few moments. âBut I shouldâve known Lauren is a high risk for heartache.â
âHave faith.â
Kyle scoffed. âIn what?â
âArenât you the one whoâs always telling me to look at things deeper?â
Kyle murmured, âYes.â
âGive her a chance and give her time.
