Chapter 12
Emma was pleased when Lord Preston crouched down beside Grace, without hesitation of any kind.
âI must admit that I have never played with dolls before,â Lord Preston said.
âThat isnât surprising,â Emma responded as she handed him the doll in her hand. âYou can play with Barbara.â
âWhat will you play with?â
âI am content watching you play with Grace.â
Lord Preston gave her a grateful smile before turning his attention towards Grace. âWhat would you like to play?â he asked.
âI donât know,â came Graceâs shy response.
Lord Preston leaned closer and asked, âShould we arm these dolls and lead them into battle?â
A small smile came to Graceâs lips. âDolls do not go into battles.â
Tabitha snorted, apparently not as enthralled by her book as she appeared.
âWhat do they do, then?â
âYou dress them and play with them in the dollhouse,â Grace explained.
âThat doesnât sound very exciting,â Lord Preston teased. âI could always commission some tiny swords and axes.â
Grace giggled. âYou are funny.â
Lord Preston ran his hand over the wooden dollâs head. âWhen I was younger, I played with toy soldiers.â
Emma interjected, âAs did I.â
With an amused look, Lord Preston responded, âWhy am I not surprised?â
âI played with my brothersâ toy soldiers,â Emma explained. âThey were much more fun than playing with dolls.â
âCan I play with toy soldiers?â Grace asked hopefully.
Lord Preston nodded. âI shall have some delivered at once, but I would encourage you to continue playing with your dolls, as well.â
Grace hugged Susan and shared, âMrs. Hepworth made me a doll, but I wasnât allowed to take it to the workhouse.â
âWhy not?â Lord Preston asked.
âMrs. Seton said no one is allowed to bring toys to the workhouse,â Grace replied dejectedly as Tabitha scowled at her book. âShe was really mean.â
âIâm sorry that Mrs. Seton was mean to you,â Lord Preston said. âIf I have my wish, no one will be mean to you ever again.â
Grace abruptly rose, leaving her doll on the ground. âI donât want to play with dolls anymore,â she said before walking over to Tabitha.
Lord Preston glanced over at Emma with a questioning look. She tilted her head towards Tabitha and Grace, encouraging him to go speak to them.
Rising, Lord Preston walked over to the girls and pointed at the book. âWhat are you reading?â
Tabitha closed the book, but she kept her gaze downcast. âIâm just looking at the pictures.â
âWhy is that?â
âIâm afraid I canât read,â Tabitha admitted.
Lord Preston reached for a chair and pulled it closer. âDo you want to learn how to read?â he asked as he sat down.
âI do,â Tabitha said, bringing her gaze to meet his. âMrs. Hepworth had just started teaching me when she grew ill.â
âI am sorry you had to witness that,â Lord Preston said.
âIt was horrible hearing her cough,â Tabitha shared. âShe would cough so hard that she would bleed into the handkerchief.â
Lord Preston gave her a sad smile. âIt was a good thing you were there to help her.â
Tabitha shrugged her tiny shoulders. âMrs. Hepworth taught me how to cook only a few things, so we ate nearly the same thing every night.
