“Brittany,” Scott called as she and Alex descended the wide front staircase. “Come see this.”

He and Ivy were in the living room facing the flat screen television.

“Brittany Sherman and her three-year old daughter, Savannah, have been missing since Monday,” the newscaster said. “If you have any information about their whereabouts, please inform the police.”

Brittany sucked a breath in. “Steven?”

“No.” Scott said. “He wouldn’t want any attention brought to himself. My sources say it was your brother, Joseph.”

Brittany’s stomach dropped. Her poor brothers. They’d never believed her about how awful their friend, Steven, was, but they’d always been good to her. What was her family going through? Her sister. Her parents. What a mess.

Steven appeared and nausea threatened. “I’m begging everyone to search for my daughter.” A picture of Brittany and Savannah flashed on the screen. “She’s so innocent and sweet.”

The camera returned to the newscaster. “Mr. Sherman has reason to believe Savannah’s mother may have abducted the little girl. If you have any information…” Her voice droned on.

“Are people really going to believe him?” Brittany asked.

Scott cleared his throat. “That story actually helps us. The police claim you’ve left the state. At least the entire valley won’t be searching these mountains for you.”

Brittany nodded her understanding. Alex put his arm around her waist and she couldn’t resist resting her head against his shoulder.

“We’ve gotten word to your parents, and to the authorities we trust, that you are safe and in protective custody. That’s all the information we’ve given out, so Sherman doesn’t know that you’re here or guess that we might be onto him.”

Ivy turned to give Brittany a smile of encouragement, but her eyes narrowed on seeing Alex, and Brittany could feel her animosity toward him. Alex rubbed his large palm along Brittany’s arm.

Scott turned off the television and they sat in silence for a minute. “I’m sorry to cause you more stress, Brittany,” Scott said. “I just thought you should know.”

“It’s okay. As long as my family knows I’m safe and Steven doesn’t find me, I’m more than happy to be here.” She glanced up at Alex and returned the warm smile he sent her way.

Ivy gave a grunt of disapproval.

Brittany sighed and pulled away from Alex. “I’m going to check on Savannah.”

“I’ll come with you,” Alex said.

She gave him another smile and slowly trudged up the main staircase. Life was weighing down on her. At least she had Savannah. She glanced over her shoulder at the extremely handsome man following her. He winked. And Alex. He was making all of this a lot more bearable.

The door to her room was open. “I closed that,” Brittany said.

Alex nodded. He strode around her and put up his arm as if to keep her back. He pushed the door farther open and whispered, “Savannah’s gone.”

Brittany ducked under his arm and sprinted into the room. The rumpled bed was empty, Savannah’s blanket discarded on the floor. “Savannah!” she screamed. She checked under the bed and in the closet while Alex searched the adjoining bathroom.
