We were about to cross through the gate back inside the walls when I saw Mateo off in the distance with two other guards. They were teaching him whatever it is they teach when one decides to protect the people in the town. I opened my mouth to call out to him, but Jonah stopped me.

He’s busy and with other people. Now wouldn’t be a good time to show him, let’s talk to him later, he advised.

I nodded and turned back to head through the gate.

We found Lincoln and Puppy first. Puppy enjoyed biting at the ground water that came shooting up from the cracks in the dirt, and Lincoln welcomed him into the apparently secret club with a pat on the back.

On our way to our shelter, we ran into Adam, whose eyes brightened with excitement when the water inside his bottle began swirling around.

“So, basically, Mateo is the only one left,” Adam remarked.

“I mean… I wasn’t really thinking of it like that, but in a way, yeah, I guess so. I’m not going to force anything though,” I told him, getting defensive.

“No, that’s not what I meant.” He rubbed the back of his neck, thinking of how to phrase his next words. “Have you told him?”

“No. We saw him earlier, but he was with some of the guards doing whatever guard things. It wasn’t the time to distract him.”

Adam nodded. “Good idea. So I guess Jonah will need to practice some.”

I will. I can take trips to the water. I was wanting to show Lighthouse the real ocean anyway, so we can take a trip for that.

Adam raised an eyebrow. “The ocean, huh? Sounds like a solid plan. Let us know if any of us can tag along.”

“You got it,” I replied. “Well, I should probably head to the medic area now. I promised Nadine I’d show up today.”

Adam nodded. “I was going to be there a little later, but I can go now.”

“No, don’t worry about it, you get some rest.” I smiled. “I’ll be fine, I promise.”

“See you soon.”
