The alert tone sounded in the captain’s quarters and Velten quickly made her way to the com panel. “Velten.” They’d been traveling southeast for a few oors, plenty of time to put sufficient distance between the rebel dirigible and the Vestigo . Even so, Olivienne worried about what the alert could mean.

“Ser, the enemy has turned away and is no longer following our ship.”

Velten pursed her lips and glanced toward the table where the other two sat. “When? And turned away how?”

“About five meens ago, ser. We wanted to be sure of a heading in order to report.”

“Direction?”

“East-northeast.”

“Thank you, ensign. Velten out.” She asked Olivienne, “Any idea what they could be after?”

Olivienne rubbed her bottom lip. “Do you have a map of Psiere?”

Velten moved to a cabinet and withdrew a rolled-up map from one of the cubbies. She pinned it to the table with the scotch glasses then pointed to a spot in the middle of the water. “We’re here.”

Olivienne traced her finger east to see if there was anything of importance along the way. “Could they be heading to Baen?”

Castellan tapped the map above the northern city. “Or maybe here. Iuvenis or Aetate.”

“The prison islands? What would they want there?”

Velten growled. “Not what, who. Perhaps they have intentions of removing someone who has been previously sentenced.”

Olivienne looked to her right. “What do we do, Tosh? There’s no way to warn Maman of a possible escape attempt.”

Velten shook her head. “True. The only option would be to alter our own course to follow them.”

Castellan stared hard at the map before shaking her head. “I don’t know if that’s where they’re going but we have to trust in the system they’ve got in place at the islands to prevent such a thing. My gut is telling me that we need to get these power sinks.”

The ship captain was skeptical. “You’re sure?”

“As sure as I can be so far out. My intuition is vaguely telling me we need to carry on.”

“We trust Tosh on this. Don’t alter course. You can inform Sendae about the rogue rebel ship heading east when we reach Occasus.”

“Yes, ser.”

Olivienne rolled her eyes. “Don’t be troublesome, Captain. I get that enough from Tosh.”

Velten freshened all their glasses then resumed her seat. “Me troublesome? You lot make my stomach burn on the regular.”

Castellan tapped the side of her glass with a blunt fingernail. “It’s never dull with the connate aboard, is it?”

Velten grinned. “At least you haven’t quit or retired before your time. That’s quite a feat from what I hear of the corp gossip.”

Olivienne snorted. “Yes, well…Tosh is uniquely hardy.”

Castellan’s ears grew warm as Velten remarked on it. “So I’ve heard.”

“If you two are finished poking holes in my reputation, I think I’m going to head back to the room.” She looked at Olivienne. “Stay and gossip longer with the captain. I’ll be sure the shields on duty know to escort you back to our berth.”

“Are you tired, love? You feel all right after the tree mishap?”

Castellan gave her a gentle smile.
