My stomach is fluttering the next day as I head toward the room Zarryn and I use to examine the explosives. I donât know if heâll even be there. I know one thing for sure thoughâif heâs going to be a jackass like he was yesterday, Iâd rather work alone.
I square my shoulders, lift my chin, and open the door.
Heâs waiting for me, and his eyes instantly meet mine. I examine his face. Heâs shaved today, and while his eyes are still sad, theyâre not hollow and hopeless like they were yesterday.
âI owe you an apology.â
I stare at the floor. He does. And yet I donât want him to see how much he hurt me.
I clear my throat, still not looking at him. âYou couldâve told me it was the anniversary, you know.â
âYou donât know what itâs like.â
I raise my eyes. âYou think youâre the only one whoâs ever lost someone and felt crippled by guilt?â Heâs silent, and I sigh. âYou know, we never shouldâve even been on that road that day my father died. But I insisted we go to the theme park. If I hadnât been a spoiled brat, my father would still be alive. He was a marine, and he didnât even die in combat. He died in a stupid car accident while on leave. And Iâll live with that for the rest of my life. But I will. Live. Because thatâs what I choose to do. You? Youâre barely existing. And I think thatâs a damn shame. Iâve done two tours, and I recognize PTSD when I see it. Why wonât you get some help?â
His jaw tightens, and I almost take my words back. But Iâm right, damn it.
âDonât apply your human limitations to me,â he grits out.
âNice. Real nice.â
He steps closer with a sigh. âItâs not your fault that your father died.â
âAnd itâs not your fault your girlfriend died.â
He shakes his head. âYou were a child. It was my job to protect Eriska.â
âWhy? She was a grown woman, Zarryn. She didnât follow orders. Jesus, this guilt is going to eat you alive.â
He says nothing as he turns and stalks away, and I let him think as I step closer to the table where the devices are still sitting, taunting us with their presence.
Relationships are a lot like bombs. Because when they end, it can feel a whole lot like destruction. Like a life-changing shock wave through everything you thought you knew.
Like ruin.
I eye Zarryn from where Iâm standing. Heâs looking out the window, the sunlight illuminating the strong planes of his face. It glints off his medallion, which peeks out from beneath his shirt. Weâre having fun. Sure, weâre enjoying each other. But Iâm a whole lot wiser than I was just a few weeks ago. And I wonât let this man destroy me.
He glances over at me, his brow creasing at whatever he sees on my face, and I force my expression to turn blank as I glance back down at the device thatâs causing us so much head-scratching.
