Chapter Six

Radek had never witnessed someone’s first transformation. It was usually a private moment with only a few family members present. His father had been there for his first time, but his mother had been too busy. She’d attended the party afterward, though. He remembered because she had told him she loved him and was proud of him. It was the last time he could remember her saying that. He looked at Piper, standing alone on the shore, and he knew without a doubt that she would always be there for him.

He felt the pulse of magic a half-second before she shifted. Her power was strong. Stronger even than it had been when she’d come back to life in his arms. After that initial thought, he was too busy appreciating her new form to think of anything else.

From the delicate lines of silver that marked her muzzle to the tip of her iridescent blue and silver tail, she was perfect. She stretched out her neck and bugled so loudly flocks of birds rose from the trees in panicked flight, then unfurled her wings, stretching them out and flapping them slowly.

“Don’t you even think about trying to fly, yet,” he called out.

She swung her head in his direction and snorted in defiance.

“It’s not the flying that I’m worried about. It’s the landing. We need a much larger space for your first attempt.” He walked over to her and waited for her to lower her head down to his level.

When she did, he stroked her cheek. “You are beautiful.”

Her eye lit with pleasure, and she rumbled deep in her chest as she nudged him with her head, almost sending him flying. “You see? You’re bigger and far stronger in this form. You’ll have to get used to this body before we start your flying lessons.”

Her eyes intrigued him. They were still blue, a trait that would mark her as unique among his kind. Romaki only had two eye colours, which were dictated by the source of their magic. Snow dragons had silver eyes, while the eyes of fire dragons were gold. Blue eyes were unheard of…until now.

She didn’t stay still for long, and he stepped back to give her room to examine her new body. She looked at every part of herself she could, twisting her long neck this way and that as she checked everything from talons to tail.

“If you walk into the water, you should be able to see your reflection,” he suggested when she had finished her preliminary inspection.

She bobbed her head, then headed to the lake. Once her back was turned, he shifted shapes, too. He hadn’t planned on it, but his dragon was insistent. “There. Happy now?”

“Yes,” the beast replied with smug satisfaction.

He joined Piper in the lake, watching as his approach sent ripples chasing across the water’s surface. “Can you hear me?” He sent the thought from his mind to hers.

Piper’s head snapped up. “Whoa. We can talk now?”

“When we’re both in dragon form, yes.”

“Must get noisy when everyone’s in dragon form.
