CHAPTER TEN

Luke shook Gus awake and herded him toward the bathroom, then went to fix his breakfast. He had waited a while to wake him, having lingered over another cup of coffee on the porch after Rachel had left to go to work.

They had woken late, having spent the previous day fishing and swimming then watching Brigade until late the night before After making love for a good long time it was actually closer to morning before either of them finally got to sleep. He had fixed her a quick breakfast and coffee while she showered, then got her off to work in a rush.

“Ok, buddy,” Luke told Gus when he stumbled into the kitchen still rubbing sleep from his eyes. “Let’s get you fed and dressed. Can’t do any field work today because of all of the rain. Cattle are all good where they’re at, so I think it might be a good day to see about a dog.”

Gus was excited to hear it.

“Yeah, and we jus’ can get my dog then!” he exclaimed as he hopped excitedly while he reached for Luke to pick him up.

He chuckled and hugged him and kissed his cheek before he sat him at the bar in front of a bowl of cereal, some milk, and orange juice.

“You bet!” he told him and tousled his hair. “I’m going to call the shelter as soon as it opens so we need to be ready to get on down there.”

“Down where?” Gus asked.

“To Sioux City! That’s where the animal shelter’s at.”

Gus nodded enthusiastically and got busy eating his cereal.

“What kind of dog you think you’d like?”

Gus shrugged and said, “A puppy dog. I only jus’ want to name it Chase.”

“Is that from Paw Patrol? The little police dog?”

He nodded.

“That’s a good name for a pup, buddy,” Luke told him. “I think it’s going to be perfect.”

Gus beamed.

“Ok, get your breakfast all eat then we’ll get you dressed.”

“Looks like a Chase to me,” Luke told Gus after he got him sat up into the passenger seat of the truck and handed him his new puppy.

Gus held him tight, rubbing his cheek against the little dog’s fur.

“Guess we better go by Wal-Mart before we go home and get him a dish and some toys and stuff. Want to show him to your mom?”

“Yeah, and can we get him a bone?”

Luke laughed. “Yeah, for sure! Every pup’s gotta have a bone.”

Gus nodded his agreement.

“He looks like he’s got some lab in him—and maybe some border collie,” Luke told him. “Looks like he’ll make a really good farm dog.”

“And he can protect us, too. If bad man’s come to our house Chase will jus’ chase them away!” Gus said emphatically.

“You bet he will!” Luke agreed wholeheartedly. “Going to be the best protector there ever was!”

“Now he jus’ wants to look outside,” Gus said when Chase got high enough to press his nose against the truck’s passenger window. “He’s jus’ looking for bad man’s.”

Luke smiled.

“Daddy?”

“What honey?”

“Thank you for to get me my puppy.
