SEVENTEEN

It must be a bitch being rich, Devlin thought. Benny had applied for the bank loan more or less to shut up his customers, who kept at him to expand. When the bank turned him down, he’d been relieved. He liked working alone at his own pace without the stress of making a monthly payment to the bank.

“Pellet thinks I’d frame his kid to get back at him for not approving a loan?”

Brian ran a hand through his hair. “You and Benny are close.” He shrugged. “A little payback would be right up your alley.”

Devlin shook his head. “Where’s Professor Mallet?” he demanded, hoping Brian, his mind still with Jack Pellet, would answer without thinking.

“What do you know about him?” Brian countered his eyes narrow.

He looked at his ex-partner, but couldn’t decide if Brian didn’t know or if he was getting better at the job. Either way, the professor was a sore spot, which could mean one of two things. Mallet wasn’t hidden away in interrogation or if he was, he wouldn’t talk. Devlin decided to give Brian a snippet and see where it got him.

“Only that he’s a professor at Saint Lawrence, and was Helen Castigan’s husband. You got him locked away somewhere, Brian?”

“That’s none of your concern.”

From his non-responsive answer, Devlin knew Brian had no idea where Mallet was. Otherwise, having put one over on him, he would gloat. That meant Professor Mallet was in the wind. The air-conditioned room didn’t account for the chill that coursed down Devlin’s back. He didn’t have the time or the inclination to play Brian’s game. He had to get out of there. Find Mallet.

“Tell Commander Greene I’ll be back later.” Devlin reached for his badge and gun.

“Oh no, you don’t.” Brian, his gun drawn, stepped between Devlin and his weapon. “I’ve got a warrant for your arrest, you’re not going anywhere except across the hall to the command room.”

“Come on, Banks. You know I didn’t kill anyone.”

“Banks? I point a gun at you and all of a sudden I become Banks? Move it.” He motioned with the gun toward the door. “Don’t try anything ’cause I don’t want to know what you’d call me if I accidentally put a bullet in you.”

“Funny,” Devlin said walking out the door with Brian close behind.

“It’s about time you two decided to join us,” Greene said barely looking up from the files spread across the table. “You can holster your gun, Detective. Officer Devlin isn’t going anywhere. As of now, you’re partners.

The look Brian gave Bill Greene was lethal.

“I’m not working with him,” Devlin snarled. “He thinks I killed Helen.”

“Then I suggest you get busy and prove him wrong.”

Fry had the good sense not to smirk. “We’ve put everything in order. I was about to hang the photos.”

Brian looked to the commander. “Who is this guy?”

“Sorry. With all the ruckus you caused, introductions were overlooked,” the commander’s voice still held a chill. “Detective Banks, Detective Fry from Illinois. He’s working a cold case similar to Jane Doe and Helen Castigan.
