Sassnitz is characterized by ferries, hotels and fishing boats. Locals call the harbour area shown here “wind promenade”. Attractions for tourists range from submarine museum to modern gallery.

Most vacationers travel to the island of Rügen, because of the beautiful sandy beaches. But after a few days of sun, one might be happy that the island’s nature offers a lot more, as seen here in the form of the forest near Mukran.

There’s a unique European nature reserve in the Schmale Heide near Mukran – a flint field. The flint stones were left thousands of years ago when floods retracted. Tree and shrub vegetation gives it a nature-loving frame.
