Mara lost herself in sensation, closing her eyes and giving herself over to it. When she opened them again, tilting her head back, her mouth open in a long moan, the moons had dipped into their descent. Not that she could see them—the pod’s windows had fogged, their heat steaming the air inside. The top of Calvy’s foot was soft against the bottom of hers as she braced against him. Her nails dug into Calvy’s butt as she pulled him into her, the final waves of her release his undoing inside her.

In three months it would be over. He would leave—he was already training for it—and there would be nothing she could do to stop it.

This would all end.

For the first time, that thought made her feel better. Gave her some solace. She had felt herself losing control on the cliff. But no matter what she felt, Calvy came with an expiration date. His contract was set. Liam would come for her. There was a limit. A safety net to catch her if she fell. Broken waves collected again.

Pleasure was good, she reminded herself. And with Calvy it was very good. There was nothing wrong with it. As long as she recognized it for what it was: temporary. That’s all pleasure ever was. That was the Balti way and Mara was a Balti Temptress, spending the moonlight on her own satisfaction.

That’s all anyone could do. Hold on to the good while it lasted and know when to let it go.
