Later I was riding the bus south again after a thorough head exam with my lovely new prescription meds in my pocket. Dr. Khatri had even snuck in an MRI. I tried not to be worried that she thought I needed an MRI.
I took out my phone to check it. There were a bunch of missed texts and messages, including several from Ben. I called him. "Hey, Ben." I watched the scenery pass by outside the bus window.
"Hey, Madison," he said. "So, I got in trouble for going rogue. My boss read me the riot act. Why did you let me do all that?"
"Let you!" I said. "You were in disguise staking out Griffin's hotel before I got there! You--"
"Okay," he said, sounding chagrinned. "You're right. I was too gung-ho. I just want to get promoted. And maybe even join the bureau someday."
The bus drove past our building. "Well, the good news is I don't see any news vans outside our apartment."
"That is good news," he said.
"I thought you were going to update me on the murder," I said.
"Oh, yeah," he said. "You were right. The vic was working for the caterer. The catering manager identified him. We're sending some officers over to his apartment now."
Something was nagging me, something I hadn't told him yet. . . Oh, right, Luke. "I saw Luke at the bus stop about an hour ago."
"You saw him!" Ben said. "Did you fight him? Did you stop him?"
"No." My nose scrunched up. I should have tried to stop him, but I didn't want to. I couldn't say that. "It was too quick. He was gone before I could react." It wasn't too quick for me to chastise him. "Do you think I have a flat affect?"
"I don't know. What does that mean?" he asked.
"You know, I don't freak out enough about all this freaky stuff." The bus passed the pedestrian Pearl Street Mall. A lot of folks were out and about, enjoying the fall day.
"You seem like a cop to me," he said.
Maybe that was it. I wasn't suffering from mental illness. I was like a cop. Focus, Mad. "Luke did not seem to be in control of his q-lapsing. Like he's not all here, in reality."
"Weird."
"Yeah." I didn't add âpoor guy' even though I was thinking it.
"You should tell Agent Baker," he said.
I glanced at my phone. One of the messages was from Lisa.
"I know." The bus approached the campus. "So, maybe I'll see you at home tonight?"
"Yeah. Let's give it a try. Maybe we can go home and not be inundated by reporters." We ended the call.
I hopped off the bus at my usual stop and walked through campus, trying to stay alert and aware of my surroundings. If Luke popped up again, I'd be ready for him.
I made my way all the way over to the physics building without incident and trudged up the many, many stairs to my eleventh-floor office. I stopped by Andro's office, but he wasn't there.
I finally got to my office and sat down to work.
