The following profile highlights the first-year seminar at Hamline University.

Hamline University

At Hamline University, the first-year seminar is designed for students to get “personal attention” and “exceptional experiences.” The seminar is taught by a faculty member who is assisted by a professional not on the faculty (e.g., a member of the Career Development Center or student affairs) and by a student leader. The staff member is considered a campus colleague, a term that has significant meaning to the faculty, staff, and students, while the student leader is part of the SOS (Students Orienting Students) team that develops the New Student Orientation Program. The classes of less than 20 students are taught collaboratively, with the faculty member serving as the student’s academic advisor for the first and second year, or until the student declares a major.

Students immediately are asked to integrate their studies with their plans beyond college—to learn skills that would prepare them for a career of their choice and for life more generally. Students learn to construct a resume during their first years and learn and practice job interviewing. It is, however, “not just getting people into jobs,” but assisting students to reflect on their gifts, their interests, skills, and life goals. Thus the goal is to encourage students to think in terms of a vocation or calling, the larger issues in life.
