Chapter Seventeen

Savior

Harper stares out the window, unaware of the car following behind. She has an innate sense of where they are going, but doesn't know the exact address. Somewhere deep inside her, she feels she’ll know when they get there. Harper wonders what she’ll find, though, will it be a burned out shell of a house, or will there be a thriving community, pulled from the ash? She has no idea, but knows this journey is necessary. All bets are off until she finds what she’s looking for and a way to reconcile her past, or run from it at least.

“Hey, lady, we almost there?” the Uber driver says in a Yankee accent. “Where we going anyway?”

“It’s a house. I’m not sure of the exact address, but I think it burned down in 2000.” she replies, looking out the window.

“Wait a minute. You talking about the Witch House? I know exactly where that was.”

Harper looks at him through the rearview mirror. “Was? I figured the old house is gone, but what’s there now?” she asks.

He shrugs. “Naw, there’s nothing but a field with some livestock. The old foundation might be somewhere in the grass if you look hard enough, but there ain’t nothing else there,” he reports, then looks in the rearview mirror at Harper. “Why would a young girl like you want to go out to the middle of nowhere? You one of them witches, ain’t ya?”

Harper looks at him smugly. “You’re a driver, do what you’re paid for and drive.”

“Alright, alright, whatever,” he says, shaking his head. “It’s up ahead.”

Harper looks out the side window and sees a house in the distance. Suddenly, her heart fills with warmness. This is the place, she knows, somewhere deep inside, she knows. She leans forward to tell the driver. “This is it right ahead,” she says. “Don’t park in front of it, though, stop on the side of the road right here. I’ll walk the rest of the way.”

The driver pulls to the side of the road and puts the car in park. He juts a thumb in the direction of some spotted cows. “See, like I told you, an empty field, except for a few cows.”

Harper stares at him strangely. He doesn’t see the house. The realization dawns on her. It’s for witch eyes only. “Oh well, I guess I’ll traipse around in the grass for a while.”

The man shrugs. “What do I know? I’m just a driver. I will let you know, you won’t have service out here and you’ll have to walk a ways before you can call for another Uber.”

“I’ll keep it in mind,” Harper says, and steps from the car.

“The driver says and shakes his head, but asks no more questions. He drives away, leaving Harper on the side of the road.

Harper fails to notice the car pulling off the highway on the opposite side of the road a few yards back near the forest. Shelley reaches for the door handle, but notices Mel stepping from the car.
