When Seth and Mom went to talk in the kitchen, I came upstairs, grabbed Leopolda, and sat with her. Because, I was getting an idea.

Here is the thing, something I only just realized lying in bed the other night, imagining me, Dad, and Toby playing ball in the same park where he first taught me how to bat. I could see his yellow hair, his favorite blue shirt and jeans. I could see his tallness but I couldn’t see his face. And if you could forget a person’s face, the most important thing of who they were, it would have to be even easier to forget how much you loved him. So what I understood, seeing how happy Mom was when Seth came to see her, was that she was already forgetting.

In Dad’s real letter were his words, the last words he ever would tell us. And I knew I couldn’t give Mom the letter. It said how Dad was waiting for us all to be together, and I knew what the words would do to her. But she needed to remember, and this was how I could bring him back, talking to her, the only words he had left to say. If I wanted I could tell her the words one at a time. I could make it last for years. If I wanted I could bring him back, just a few seconds a day, for the rest of my life.

I unfolded the letter, and how I felt was like I might break open, like if I looked down I really might see inside my ribs. I put my hands like I was about to pray, opened them a tiny crack, and then I held my breath and put my hands in front of one eye. This is what I saw:
