chapter nine
Are you running away from home?â Morganâs mom asked.
Morgan grinned. âNo, Mom.â
âWell, whatâs with the duffel bag?â
âJust some things I donât really need.â
âLike what?â Mom set her newspaper aside and peered curiously at Morgan.
âJust some clothes.â Morgan shrugged. âI have a lot of clothes, you know.â
âI know. But what are you going to do with those?â
âTheyâre for a friend.â
âA friend?â
Morgan sat down on the couch next to Mom now. âI canât really give you all the details. But Emily doesnât really have many clothes right now. I think they moved here in such a hurry that their stuff isnât here yet, you know?â
Mom nodded. âOh.â
âYeah, and so I thought I could share. I mean, I donât need all the clothes I have, and Emilyâs been wearing the same jeans every day since sheâs been here.â
Mom smiled. âMorgan, I think thatâs a great idea. But Emily is a few inches shorter than you. Did you pick out things that will fit?â
âYeah. In fact, I found some things Iâd actually outgrown.â
âIs there anything else her family might need?â asked Mom. âYou know that Grandma and I would be happy to share.â
âI donât know,â admitted Morgan. âBut I can ask Emily.â
âI hope this wonât make her feel embarrassed,â said Mom.
âI thought about that,â admitted Morgan. âI decided that Iâm going to tell her itâs a God thing. And that God wants his children to share with each other. And so she canât be offended. Unless she wants to get mad at God, that is. And I donât think thatâs such a good idea.â
Mom laughed. âNo, I donât think thatâs such a good idea either. Let me know if we can help.â
Morgan put a duffel-bag strap over her shoulder and went outside. She hoped she didnât run into Carlie or Amy just now. She wasnât sure what she would say to them. More than anything, she wanted to respect Emilyâs privacy. She knew that it had been hard for Emily to open up to her. It might be too much to have Carlie and Amy in on this too.
Morgan glanced both ways, but the neighborhood looked pretty quiet just now. So, shooting up a quick prayer, she darted down the street toward Emilyâs house. And soon she was knocking at the door.
âItâs just me,â she called out. âMorgan!â
âHi, Morgan,â said Emily, opening the door. âCome on in.â
âSorry to just pop in unexpectedly again,â began Morgan. âI wouldâve calledâ¦â
âWhatâs up?â asked Emily. âYou moving in or something?â
Morgan laughed. âNot exactly.â
âSo, whatâs with the suitcase?â
âWell, I was doing some closet cleaning this afternoon, and I noticed that some of my clothes were getting too small. I think Iâve grown about three inches this past year. Even my feet got bigger. I used to wear size 6 shoes last fall, and now Iâm wearing 8s. I hope they donât keep growing.â
âI wear a 6,â said Emily.
âYeah, so I was thinking maybe you could use some of these things.â Morgan set the bag on the floor with a thump.
