The Interview
Morticia and Raphael are sisters. Raphael has died. Raphael is interviewing for a job on Mars. This is Morticia helping with the interviewing for Raphaelâs position.
Interviewer: Morticia, do you understand why we employ people like your sister in our Mars space station?
Morticia: Dead people like my sister?
I: Donât look at it as bad sister helps dead sister get desired space station job.
M: Of course ⦠no.
I: Live bodies are worrisome. This takes complications out of the equation. Brain work.
M: Clear to me. Bodies equal issues. Distraction
. . . maintenance?
I: Morticia, tell us about your sister.
M: Sheâs Mensa.
On the wall in front of her, Morticia, the questioned sister, views a conversation on film between the two siblings when they were younger.
I: Do you remember this particular conversation with Raphael? (Raphael is off-screen)
M: Yes.
I: Can you overdub both parts of the conversation to the best of your ability?
M: Sure. (uncertain pause) Here goes:
M: I say Raphael! Not that red whitening gel!
R: Why?
M: Choose Crest! Accepted by the American Dental Association.
R: Arenât all toothpastes the same?
M: I read in My Ãntonia that white teeth â¦
R: Mine.
M: Yours ⦠are not strong or long-lasting as the tiny yellow, too brown variety.
R: Yours.
M: Mine.
I: Morticia, what will it mean for you, personally, if Raphael gets the position on the space station?
M: Amaze-balls! My sister in a position like that? My life is sure to change.
I: Your life. (pause) Tell me what you see on-screen. Now.
M: Middle-aged me. Morticia. Bejeweled. Walking my dog. Same as every day. Nothing has changed.
I: Authorities professionally gathered psychological information about Raphael. You, as opposed to the other relatives, have been silent and adamantly not forthcoming.
M: Not qualified to give psych info.
I: Afraid? To be scrutinized yourself?
M: There is that. Of course. No shortage of people marching in ⦠to comment ⦠would be my uneducated guess.
I: Correct. Those marching in have been scrutinized. They come off as extremely unstable. Axe to grind types.
M: Yes, my family. Family members are talkers. Replete with motives, low returns on money, expectations, implements of destruction.
I: Hatred. Biases. What is on-screen now?
M: My mother screaming, âYou whore,â way too close to Raphaelâs puffy teenage face.
I: Message being?
M: No secret there! The usual: You need a nose job? You are fat whore. You slut!
I: Please overdub your Mom talking here. Match with what you view on-screen.
M: âStop eating so much. Let me make you some food.â
I: Raphael complained about parental inconsistencies. Understandable.
M: She saw the hilarity with the âStop eating so much.â The âYOUâRE FAT.â The âLet me make you some food.â Syndrome.
I: Funny girl. Could laugh at herself.
M: Yes. Very funny girl. She would joke Iâm fat, ugly and stupid. And someone would pipe in, âYouâre not stupid!â
I: Hah! Ironically, stealing is what landed her with her mother in the burbs?
M: Everyone stole. She got caught. Never squealed. Lived by a never-squeal code.
I: What do you see on-screen now?
M: Our old neighborhood. My idea. Four little girls running to a beautiful anachronistic Southern mansion.
