Chapter 22 - Ridley

Ridley soon forgot about her fight with Jessica when they reached the docks. The Captain navigated the boat until it almost touched the nearest open jetty and shut down the engine. The crew tied down the boat, and everyone lined up to disembark.

She jumped off the boat with a light step, followed by Loki, and looked around. Guards approached, armed with guns. Each wore a black jacket with a golden V embroidered on the chest, and she marveled at their efficiency. They quickly checked everyone’s credentials, asked a few pointed questions, and searched the boat. Afterward, they issued visitor passes to everyone, including Ridley.

The only problem was Loki. He was not allowed to roam about the city freely and had to be on a leash. This caused Ridley some consternation, and she had to fashion a rough leash from the rope in her bag. Loki didn’t like the contraption and balked at first. After much pleading, he went along with it but made his displeasure known with his stiff posture.

“I’m sorry, boy. It’s only for a little while; I promise,” Ridley said. Holding the leash tightly, she followed Rupert, Jessica, and Bear.

Together, they walked the short distance toward the entrance of Vancouver, escorted by a couple of guards. Once inside, Jessica turned to one of the guards and asked, “Do you know when the race starts?”

“The Chilliwack race?” the guard asked.

“That’s the one,” she said.

“You’re in luck. The race starts tomorrow. One more day, and you’d have been too late.”

“Tomorrow?” Ridley cried, stunned. “Can people still enter?”

“That I don’t know,” the guard said. “You’ll have to find out at city hall. I do know the official welcoming ceremony is tonight. That’s when all of the contestants will be introduced. The tickets cost an arm and a leg, though, so the likes of me won’t be there.”

Ridley looked at Jessica, silently panicking. “What now?”

“Now we go to city hall,” Jessica replied, handing the guards a few credits each. “Thanks for the escort.”

“No problem. Do you know where to find the city hall?” the guard asked.

“I do, thanks,” Jessica replied. “I used to live here.”

“You did? That’s great. You’ll know your way around then,” the guard said. “Good luck!”

He left them to their own devices, and Jessica turned to face the group. “We’d better hurry and get to the city hall before it’s too late.”

“This is where we part ways,” Rupert said. “I have to find my people.”

“Of course. We understand,” Jessica said. “We’ll meet again, I’m sure.”

“I look forward to it, and good luck, young Ridley. I wish you and Loki success in the race,” Rupert added.

With those parting words, he set off in search of his caravan, and Jessica led the rest of the group hurried toward the city center. According to her, the city hall formed its heart, and they had several miles to cover on foot.

For Ridley, the run was nothing. Her body moved on autopilot while her brain marveled at the sights. She’d hoped they’d have time for a tour, but that ship had sailed.
