CHAPTER 39

Casey was not proud about what happened between her and Ryder—again. It was like a fond farewell. She had come to Chicago to sign the papers, and regardless of what transpired, she had to do so and be on a flight by eleven a.m. back to LA.

They met at a restaurant near O’Hare, typical of their blighted fate. Meeting the moment, cold and sober in the early morning, across from a couple of coffees and some scrambled eggs.

Ryder laid the large manila envelope between them on the sticky Formica. Casey paused, and then opened it and slid out the documents, fanning them out on the table. She removed a pen from her purse that, ironically, was one she had taken from the Vegas hotel. It read: The Regency Grand, Las Vegas.

She signed all the pages that were marked with little yellow Post-it notes, then gathered all the papers together, slipped them back into the envelope, and handed it back to Ryder.

“You’re officially free,” she said with a smile.

He half-smiled and looked down pensively at his coffee. “For all it’s worth, Case, I enjoyed the ride.”

“It was okay being married to you,” she said, feeling like she needed to say something. “You took me to a place that I thought I’d never go, and I am grateful to you for that. This could have been so much more of a disaster.”

She was thanking him in her own way and hoped that he understood.

“What’s next?” he asked, attempting to make more conversation.

“I’m heading to London,” she said and brightened. “I’ve got a second reading for a part that I’m pretty sure I’m going to get, and I couldn’t be more excited.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard that Alto Vuoria does amazing work. And I think, Case, this part will really help you make your mark.”

“It’s the one I’ve been waiting for,” she said. “I have a wonderful feeling about it.”

“That’s dope.” He smiled. “I’m on my way to Atlanta after this one wraps. Apparently, there is a romantic comedy with my name on it that begins shooting in a few weeks.”

“Well, I’ll be waiting for the time when we can do one together,” Casey said.

“That would be amazing!”

It really would be, Casey thought as the two stood up at the same time to leave. She reached for her wallet.

“I’ve got you,” Ryder said, grabbing the check.

“Thanks,” Casey said, glancing at her phone. “My Uber is a minute away. Ryder, I really wish nothing but the best for you.”

“You too,” he said, walking her out.

Then, reaching in for a hug, he pulled her close, the zipper on his leather jacket digging into her cheek. She inhaled his cologne one more time.

“See ya around!” she said, as the car pulled up. She climbed into the backseat like a bachelorette without a rose. “Stay weird!”

He laughed, hands in his pockets and sporting that boyish grin.

Casey waved through the glass. It was time to go home.
