Chapter Eleven

Piper

Finn led us past a cop break room filled with Muse Island’s public servants. Though with my new vision, it looked more like a menagerie. Under the human faces they wore, my second sight noticed various dogs, lions, bears, and leopards. There were even a few eagle hybrids and one creature that looked eerily close to a Komodo dragon.

A few of them turned our direction.

Instinct urged me to run. I was very much on the menu with Mykos leading this bunch, and the only reason they weren’t pouncing was because of an invisibility trick. I tightened my grip, pressed myself closer in to Finn, tried not to think of my magic, my mark. Any display of my power might give me away.

“Hey, guys. Anyone catch the latest Surf Wars?” Finn lowered his pitch, establishing himself as alpha of this group.

The officer who had the hidden Komodo dragon face edged closer, his nose in the air, sniffing.

“How about those stats on Lono?” Finn addressed the advancing dragon. “He looks set to take the win this year, but there’s no telling with Kū in the race. What do you think?”

Smart, what he was doing—distract, bolster, and for me, side-step discovery.

Officer Dragon let his shoulders fall and launched into his own theory of how this Surf Wars, which I could only assume was some surfing competition, was going to pan out. The rest of the room visibly relaxed, and Finn was able to edge us closer and closer to the door.

One more step, and we’d be in the hallway. Officer Dragon took a deep breath to launch into his next set of theories and paused.

“You change up your cologne, Kalani?” He set his feet apart wide, his tone light, but his knees bent, his hands spread. “Floral is an interesting choice.”

My heart ticked up, up, up, and my hands slicked around Finn’s arm. He smells my perfume. Finn rolled his shoulder, and his bicep under my hand went hard, but he kept that easygoing grin.

“Not my cologne, my date’s perfume.” He let a just-got-laid smirk spread across his lips, and I resisted the urge to stomp on his foot.

Officer Dragon nudged the officer next to him, like we were standing in a locker room instead of a professional workplace. “Nice. Finally bag Bastet?”

It was my turn to tighten my muscles.

“Nah, you wouldn’t know her. Tourist.” Finn began backing us out of the room.

“Best kind, you ask me,” Officer Dragon drawled, as if he knew. “No commitment, no drunk texts in the middle of the night, love and leave. Am I right?”

“What can I say? It's my duty to show tourists the best attraction on the island.” Finn winked.

The other guys elbowed each other and laughed.

“I’ve gotta run, guys. Nice catching up. I’ll send some pies over on Friday. You deserve them.” Finn turned our backs to the room and casually strode us down the hallway, to the sound of cheers and “You’re our hero, Kalani” sarcastically thrown after us.

Finn had gotten us through the room by practically turning those predators into his personal fan club.
