December 27 Among the holiday season visitors to Palm Beach was Golda Meir, once a schoolteacher in Milwaukee and now the foreign minister of Israel.

December 29 The Kennedys board Marine One, the presidential helicopter, at Palm Beach for the short run to Miami.

December 29 Waiting for the Kennedys at the Orange Bowl were the survivors of Brigade 2506—the Cubans who had escaped the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, their family members, and other exiled Cubans. The president had been prepared to read a rather cool and diplomatic speech. But as the crowd of forty thousand cheered, a brigade member handed Kennedy a flag the survivor had hidden in a Cuban prison for twenty months. The president got carried away and said, “I want to express my great appreciation to the brigade for making the United States the custodian of this flag. I can assure you that this flag will be returned to this brigade in a free Havana.” Mrs. Kennedy translated her husband’s words into perfect Spanish, a touch that brought cheer after cheer from the Cubans.
