Lahinch to Liscannor

The driving tour begins with a right turn just before Lahinch 1 [map] (approaching from Ennis), but first carry straight on, turning right off the main road at the top of the village to park above the long sandy beach, where you can take a walk along its promenade. These days surfers may even outnumber golfers, and the village has a lively nightlife.

Return to the R478. The road curves north to west through the golf links and a series of sand dunes, with intermittent sea views.

Liscannor

The tiny village of Liscannor 2 [map] nearby is somewhat overwhelmed by newly built holiday homes, but still has an excellent pub at its centre, Vaughan’s Anchor Inn, see 1 [map] . The village has given its name to a black stone, Liscannor slate, usually used as flagstones, which bear the fossil remains of marine animals that lived up to 300 million years ago. In the early twentieth century, more than five hundred men were employed in local quarries.
