Originally built for a merchant’s family in the nineteenth century, the Quinta da Macieirinha was bought by port wine millionaire Antonio Ferreira Pinto Basto, who used it as a summer house. He hosted a variety of illustrious guests here, including the King of Piedmont and Sardinia who stayed after his exile, and died here in 1849. The house has been renovated and refurnished with genuine furniture and artefacts from the period, giving a fascinating insight into life among Porto’s wealthy nineteenth-century society. There’s a billiard room, ballroom and private chapel and, as ever, the grounds are a beautiful, peaceful oasis with great views over the Douro.
