Later that night I was really hungry. It would have been nice if Darryl was in town to grab dinner together at a nice restaurant. Instead I went home and cooked some baked chicken, yellow rice, and a green salad. I sat at my dining room table with the lights down and my candles lit and had a nice dinner, sipping on the wine Stephanie and Tangie left the night before. In the middle of my intimate evening, Darryl called me on my cell phone. I turned up the lights in the dining room as I answered.
âHey, baby. How do you feel?â
âFine,â I snapped.
âAre you still sick?â
âNope,â I replied sharply.
âWhat are you doing?â he asked.
âNothingâjust having dinner alone, thatâs all.â
âWhatâs wrong with you?â he asked.
I was silent.
âMya, whatâs going on?â Darryl repeated.
âWell, Darryl, where should I begin? Letâs see. Iâm sick as a dog and you canât even come by for a minute to check on me before you go out of town. I didnât hear from you yesterday, and now you call me tonight like everything is fine.â
âWait, what are you trying to say?â
âIâm not trying to say nothing. It is what it is,â I replied.
âDamn, Mya. Did you ask me about my day? Did you bother to call me? Câmon, it works both ways. Iâm under a lot of pressure at work. I canât do everything.â
âCanât you make more of an effort, at least?â I asked.
âDamn, where is all of this coming from? I called to let you know I miss you and you come at me like I just donât give a fuck about you.â
I was quiet.
âLook, I apologize if Iâm not more attentive but you have to meet me halfway,â Darryl continued.
âYeah,â I replied.
âI know Iâm not perfectââ
âIâm not asking you to be perfect, Darryl. I just want you to be more considerate thatâs all. I needed you and you werenât there for me is all Iâm saying.â
Darryl paused. âWhy does it always have to be me thatâs fucking up? I donât complain about your shit.â
âWhat shit?â I replied, defensive.
âWhen you donât call, I donât take it personally,â he said.
âI do callâyou just never pick up the phone.â
âYou know what, Mya? Youâre making this argument too personal.â
âToo personal? Youâre supposed to be my man and I canât get you to pick up the phone when I call. Iâve noticed how you ignore your calls sometime.â
âYour man? Hold on, Mya. I thought we were taking it one step at a time.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âNow youâre labeling our friendship?â
âFriendship? What friendship? We got beyond friends when we were intimate,â I replied.
âHold up a minuteâitâs obvious we have a lot to talk about. Our understanding of this is completely mixed up,â Darryl said firmly.
I stood there holding the phone, completely stunned. âWhat? How can you say that? What about all the time we spent together and the nights weââ
âWe were enjoying our passion at the moment,â Darryl interrupted.
Tears began to well in my eyes. âAre you out of your fucking mind? I donât âenjoy passionâ with a friend like that.
