I blinked, taking in the incredible news. âYou were married to Xander?â
She nodded. âJes, but it did not go so right for us.â She looked at the ground. âIt ees hard to explain.â
It was hard to believe sweet little Sophia had been married to big grumpy Xander. But I was sad to have upset her. I nodded. âI understand. I was married once, too. Sometimes people just change.â Xander must have changed an awful lot because I couldnât imagine her with him as he was now.
She continued, âIt mostly was because of the Greco Motors. He didnât believeâ¦â
âSophia, vieni qui!!â
We turned at the sound to see a group of people enter, all speaking excitedly in Italian. Sophia said, âMi scusiâ to us and ran to meet them. Among the people, I recognized three: Anna, Giacomo, and Carlo. I imagined Rosa was probably lying in a hospital somewhere.
Kim said, âIâll bet Rosa was supposed to be here too.â
I said, âThatâs what I was just thinking. So, what do you think about Sophia being married to Xander?â
We sat down on the cold bleachers and Kim said, âItâs really hard to imagine them together, butâ¦if Sophia was part of the family, it explains why she is so involved in Greco Motors.â
I nodded. âYeah. And I kind of get why she didnât sit with him at the gala. I wouldnât want to sit by Todd, either.â I shook my head at the thought of my aggravating ex-husband. âSo, what do you think she was going to say about Xander and the company?â
Kim sat beside me and said quietly, âMaybe he didnât believe in the way it was being run or who should be in charge?â
I gulped. âDo you think Xander cut the cable? Maybe he wants to run the company.â
Kim rolled her eyes. âPity, nobody has confirmed the cable was cut. But still, we might want to stay clear of him.â
The group of well-dressed people climbed the steps to the stage, pointed at the equipment, and tried out the microphone. I picked up one of the programs and, even though it wasnât in English, I could decipher the order. Francescaâs name was listed twice; once at the top beside the words, âFratelli DâItalia. Maybe it was the Italian national anthem. The other time was toward the bottom â maybe with my jingle. Eeek. I looked around. Where was Francesca anyway?
I studied the program more closely and frowned when I didnât see my name listed. Oh, for goodness sake, get over it, Pity. They never include the name of Francis Scott Key - they only acknowledge the singer of the Star-Spangled Banner. Oh, so now I was comparing my jingle to our national anthem. Good grief. I shook my head and focused on my surroundings.
The place was bustling with workers cleaning the stadium and setting up chairs on the stage. Carlo barked orders to a couple of men dressed in black while he pointed to the spot where the car might go.
