Assistants’ Assistance

I can’t believe I went to rehearsal last night,” Digby said. “And yet I missed all the drama.”

“It was terrible,” Nina said, shuddering. “I thought I was afraid of the dark before all that happened.”

“Nina, would you help me with this batter?” Heather asked.

They were in the Donut Delights kitchen, and she hoped that having her assistant focus on a task she enjoyed would help her forget about the horrors of the night before.

“I can’t believe someone famous died right down the street,” Digby said, as he sliced up some pineapple for the recipe. “I know Art Sandford wasn’t as big as he used to be, but people still knew his name.”

“I’m going to be sleeping with the lights on for a few days. I can tell you that,” Nina said, stirring more frantically than usual. “If I had known there was a killer on the loose, I never would have taken my seat.”

A thought occurred to Heather. “Nina, you were seated farther back than I was.”

“I hope you don’t think I was avoiding you. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to sit near you. But you looked like you had a group of friends already.”

“I didn’t think that, though you are always welcome to sit with me.”

“I was working up the courage to sit near the guy who works at Sun and Fun Novelties, but then I lost my nerve and sat in the back.”

“It’s because you were sitting there that I have a question. Did you notice anyone rushing past you after the lights went out?”

Nina thought about it even though it was clear that this was something she would rather forget. “There was movement, but it was more fearful and confused. No one ran past me with a purpose. I think I would have registered that because my sensors were on high alert. Is that helpful?”

“Very,” Heather told her. “It confirms that the shooter needed to be someone from the front of the room. I’m going to discount Eva and Leila as suspects.”

“They might be fiery, but I can’t see those nice old ladies killing anyone,” Digby agreed.

“So that means that it had to be either one of the writers or their guests that were seated up front,” said Heather.

“I like thinking that I was helpful,” said Nina. “But if it’s something as important as that, maybe you should check with Janae too.”

“That’s a good idea. Could you two finish up these donuts?”

Her assistants agreed, and she left them to create their confectionary magic. Janae finished serving a customer as Heather came to the front of the shop to see her.

“How’s the case coming?” Janae asked. “Do you think you’ll be able to solve it faster because you were there?”

“I wish,” Heather said.

She asked the same question that she had asked Nina and was given a similar answer.

“No. I didn’t notice anyone rushing toward the writers. Are you trying to determine where the killer came from?”

“Exactly and it looks like they had to be in front of us.
