We get in the car and buckle in. “So? You got a text message. What does that mean?”

“I realized I was afraid of losing Derek as a friend. We don’t work together as a couple, but we were always good friends. Is it so wrong to want that back?”

Kimmy sighs. “No. I miss him, too.”

“I needed to show Derek that we could still be friends, even if we all loathe his new girlfriend.”

“Maybe he sees something in her that we don’t.”

We turn to each other—secretly hoping that’s an option, despite the fact that we both know it isn’t possible. We break out into laughter at the same time.

“I hope so, for his sake,” I finally say, before starting the car.
