When Lindsey got back from drop-off, Chris was out. So she went for a long walk. Every day on the beach was different. The dynamic nature of water caused areas that were firm with fine sand one moment to be mushy and pebble-covered only hours later. Lindsey knew that the tide was one very long wave that moved around the world. It didn’t stop or start; the tide and wind were constant and relentless. Walking here was different from walking on the sidewalk in Portland, where changes were less obvious and linked to the four seasons. Here the rain fell, the sun came out, the wind could be a whisper and then a howl—all in a single hour. But the temperature was always warm, consistent, tropical, driven by trade winds, which were unpredictable enough to suddenly swirl in a new direction without warning.
