Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (eekh HET-tuh gehrn EYE-nen kah-FAY): I’d like (a cup of) coffee.

Germans have always been very proud of their coffee, but today there is a greater variety than ever before. Italian espresso remains popular, but the word Kaffee can mean many things, from “straight” coffee to Italian, Viennese, or Starbucks versions. In the German-speaking countries it is common to have an after-dinner coffee.

Wir möchten eine Vorspeise bestellen. (veer MERG-ten EYE-nuh FOR-shpy-zuh buh-SHTELL-en): We would like to order an appetizer.

If you’d like an appetizer before the main course, you can get a soup or salad, and often certain other dishes, depending on the type of restaurant. The typical German restaurant “mixed salad” (gemischter Salat) is not the typical American lettuce-and-tomato salad with dressing, but a coleslawlike mixture of lettuce, shredded carrots, cucumbers, red cabbage, and a sweetish-tasting mayonnaise-type dressing. Some restaurants also have a salad bar where you can make your own salad and choose a dressing.
