Two days later Napoleon spoke to a special meeting in the farmyard. “We’ve sold the timber to Frederick,” he told the animals. “We’re not speaking to Pilkington any more. It’s not true that Frederick wants to attack Animal Farm. Snowball is in Pilkington’s farm, Foxwood. Death to Pilkington!”

Later Squealer explained. “We never really wanted to sell the timber to Pilkington. We only said that because we wanted the price to go up, of course. Frederick is paying twelve pounds more! Isn’t Great Napoleon clever? And Frederick has already paid for the timber. We have a lot of money!”

Frederick’s men came and took the timber away. Then Napoleon put the money in the window of the farmhouse, and all the animals came to look at it.

Three days later Mr Whymper rode quickly into the farmyard on his bike. He ran into the house, and there was a terrible shout from Napoleon’s rooms. The money was not real. Frederick had the timber for nothing!

Napoleon called a meeting. “Death to Frederick!” he said. “He might attack us now. Some pigeons have flown to talk to Pilkington. We need his help.”

Frederick did attack, with fifteen men and six guns. The animals fought, but they could do nothing against the guns. Then the pigeons came back from Pilkington. One of them carried a piece of paper. “NOT MY PROBLEM,” it read.

Frederick’s men were now at the windmill. Benjamin was watching them. “They’re going to blow it up,” he said.

The animals waited. The men worked and worked, and then there was a terrible noise. Stones flew into the air, and there was a cloud of black smoke. The windmill was not there.
