drifted over to the cliff‘s edge admiring the sun‘s

awakening over the horizon. I could look down on

most of the island from this point, the ocean below

us, the waves slapping in their hypnotic way.

Pink ribbons edged the horizon. I stood,

enthralled, shocked when somebody pushed me.

Kimo had put so many charms on our property

that I was prevented from toppling over the edge.

It worked like an invisible fence and kept our little

monkeys secure from harm, but then two little

hands shoved me again.

―Hey!‖ I shouted. ―Cut that out!‖

I turned, but nobody was there.

Pele, standing on the edge of the pond, turned

and stared at me in surprise. She frowned. She

raced over, hurling a fireball right next to me. I

screamed and jumped out of the way.

―No, Jinky!‖ She stamped her foot. ―Don‘t hurt

my Mama.‖ She gazed up at me. My little

sweetheart. I pulled her into my arms.

―Thank you, sweetie.‖

―No biggie, Mama.‖ She sounded just like

Kamaha. She kissed my face then squirmed out of

my arms again. She was a busy child with things

to do, places to go, ghosts to see…

Would I ever see these pesky ghosts?

I walked back to the lanai, a little shaky now.

Maybe the ghost of Jinky had been trying to play

and have fun, but what if I‘d gone over the edge?
