Chapter 11
Kate was fully aware of today's date. Exactly two months had passed since the trip back to Virginia with her sister. Each day since had been eventful, and this day, when she was about to see Bejoy for the first time in two weeks, promised to be eventful, too.
Two months ago she and Bejoy had come home to a hero's welcome. When they had finally parked the rental car in front of the Brogan home, Mickey had been waiting with a hot meal and a hug for each of them. That night Kate's sons had given up their room so that Bejoy would have a little privacy, and they had spent the next six weeks on the pull-out sofa bed.
To make the move an adventure, the boys had claimed they were camping out, and even though they were a little old for "let's pretend," Kate had furthered the illusion by draping a blanket over the dining table that took up nearly half of their living room. She set up the "tent" every night after dinner and removed it every morning, and it wasn't unusual to find one boy sleeping there while the other took up all the space on the pull-out. A time or two Kate had found Bejoy under the blanket instead. By the end she had half wanted to crawl under the table, herself.
The confines of the Brogan's tiny house had made those weeks difficult, but Bejoy had been surprisingly resilient. They had cooked together and done a thorough cleaning after Bejoy announced that she liked to clean and was very good at it. With Bridget for company, they had hiked together, visited local shops, taken a day to drive a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and worked on their quilts.
On the first Wednesday after the trip, Kate took Bejoy to the church quilting bee and introduced her. The women made her right at home, and Grace Cashel, well-known for her art quilts, was excited about Bejoy's pillowcase quilt. After the bee Grace invited the sisters to her house for lunch, and she turned Bejoy loose in her extensive fabric stash to choose a dozen pieces of fabric to add to her own. Then Bejoy and Grace discussed each one and the shapes Bejoy might create from it.
Kate would never forget that day. Bejoy was warmly welcomed by her quilting friends, and Grace's enthusiasm for Bejoy's work was genuine. She was even learning to hand quilt. Her stitches were already better than her sister's.
Kate had been so proud of her twin. After they had attended more of the bees, Bejoy had enjoyed giving her opinion on the blocks for the raffle quilt, which were just beginning to arrive. The bee had chosen Helen's idea, of course, and named the quilt in progress Peaks and Valleys.
Most important, Kate had completed the paperwork to make sure that Bejoy received all the assistance she was eligible for, including a program that would help train and find work for her.
