The next time I went to take a shower, I found Vanda had followed me. At least, I assumed she’d followed me since her room – and therefore most convenient bathroom – was on a different floor.

She got undressed and into the shower two down from me in silence.

“You can tell Dante I’m surprised he didn’t just follow me in himself,” I told her, as though I was commenting on the weather or the temperature of the water.

“So am I,” she quipped.

There was a smirk on her face and in her eyes, and a note in her voice I wanted no part of. It was far too familiar. Far too…affectionate. Like we chose to hang out. Like we were friends. And we were most certainly not friends.

We ignored each other as we got on with showering. Vanda seemed in no rush to finish, and I had to admit to drawing out my own shower to confirm my suspicions she was only there because Dante thought I needed protecting.

I stepped out of the shower and Olivia and Jaz were standing there, their faces set for intimidation. Honestly, they trooped all the way over to the girl’s dorm bathroom instead of using theirs in the Manor, and all they were going to get was disappointment? Talk about shitty life choices.

“Nice day for it,” I said, and they frowned.

“I thought you’d know better by now than to show your face in here,” Olivia sneered.

“I think you’ll find I know no such thing,” I replied.

Jaz took a step towards me. “Then we’ll have to impress it upon you.”

“You can try,” I told her.

“I think you’ll find it’ll be a fair fight,” Vanda said, turning off her shower.

“I think you’ll find I can protect myself,” I said to Vanda, not taking my eyes off Liv and Jaz.

Olivia scoffed. “You think you can fight us?”

“You think I spent the last ten months just licking my wounds?”

Jaz’s smirk made her hideously unattractive as her eyes darted to the scar on my cheek. “I don’t doubt it took the whole ten months.”

My hand shot out and jabbed into Jaz’s nose. She recoiled, her hand going to her face as she glared daggers at me.

“Bitch!” Liv cried then lunged at me.

I dodged easily out of the way, spinning behind her and kicking her in the back of the knee. She went down on the hard tiles, and I grabbed a handful of her hair to pull her head back to look up at me.

“Touch me again,” I dared her.

“You will pay, Raine,” she snarled.

I grinned down at her, but it was anything but humoured. “No, Liv. Or are you forgetting how well I know you?” Fear lit her eyes as she understood the implication of my words; last year, she’d been my ‘friend’. I knew things about her she didn’t want other people to know. “Touch me again and you’ll pay.”

I threw her to the floor. She and Jaz helped each other out of the bathroom, stealing angry glances back at me.
